JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Regional Infrastructure and Development (IPK) Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) responded to the proposal for a special train carriage for smokers.

According to Coordinating Minister AHY, the government's focus is on more equitable transportation connectivity, instead of the proposal.

"I think there are still many things that are more important for me to respond to, which is clear that we must strengthen connectivity between regions, as well as multimodal transportation on land, sea, air and rail," AHY said as quoted by ANTARA, Saturday, August 23.

"I'm more focused on how this roadmap can accommodate various interests," he added.

Coordinating Minister AHY said that the government's roadmap related to transportation must be more affordable and inclusive for the community.

"For example, mobility must be faster, must be more affordable, both for human transportation, including services," he said.

In addition, Coordinating Minister AHY also emphasized how the convenience and access to more equitable transportation in Indonesia is expected to be able to accelerate productivity and economic growth in various regions.

"The second is also the same importance to get our focus is how the transportation or connectivity opened new locations or points for economic growth and regional development," he said.

The Coordinating Minister gave an example of how the Transit Oriented Development (TOD) concept continues to be developed in order to achieve the government's main goal in terms of transportation.

"TOD, this is the development of locations as transportation hubs (which bring shelters and workplaces closer) which also supports today's spirit, namely sustainability," said AHY.

"So it is increasingly reducing the so-called carbon footprint, reducing emissions or CO2 is also a target that we must jointly monitor. Because we want to seriously prevent worse global warming and this crisis," he added.

Previously, DPR member Nasim Khan suggested that PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) provide special carriages for smokers on long-distance trains.

This proposal was submitted in a hearing with KAI President Director Bobby Rasyidin on Wednesday (20/8).

Responding to this, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) emphasized that all train services operated remain smoke-free, as part of the company's efforts to maintain the comfort and safety of all customers.

Similarly, the Director General of Railways of the Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) Allan Tandiono also stated that trains are public transportation entering the area without cigarettes (KTR) to ensure the health and comfort of all passengers.
