JAKARTA - The National Narcotics Agency (BNN) destroyed 474,480.68 grams, or approximately 474 kilograms, of narcotics evidence from the investigation of 21 criminal cases in five provinces: Jakarta, Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, and Bali.

The evidence consisted of four types of narcotics: 253,067.88 grams of methamphetamine (53 percent), 218,414.22 grams of marijuana, 2,998.58 grams of cocaine, and 94 ecstasy pills. All of the evidence was confiscated from 43 suspects who had been arrested.

"The destruction of narcotics evidence today was carried out at two locations: at the BNN Field using an incinerator, and at the PT Jasa Medivest Plant facility in Dawuan, Karawang," said BNN Head Commissioner General Marthinus Hukom in a press statement in Jakarta, Antara, Friday, August 22.

Prior to destruction, some of the evidence was set aside for laboratory testing and court proceedings.

Of the 253,611.97 grams of crystal methamphetamine confiscated, 496.91 grams were used for laboratory testing and 47.19 grams for legal evidence.

Meanwhile, of the 222,565.35 grams of marijuana, approximately 3,151.13 grams were set aside for the laboratory and 1,000 grams for the court process.

The cocaine evidence, originally totaling 3,089.36 grams, was also sorted, with 0.22 grams for laboratory testing and 90.56 grams for legal evidence. Of the 98 ecstasy pills confiscated, four were set aside for laboratory testing.

The Acting Deputy for Eradication at the National Narcotics Agency (BNN), Budi Wibowo, explained that the destruction process was carried out using a two-stage or two-burner incinerator.

In the first furnace, narcotics are burned at temperatures of 600–850 degrees Celsius. At this stage, the narcotic molecules begin to break down, although some remain as gas or fine particles.

The process continues in the second furnace, which operates at temperatures of 850–1,100 degrees Celsius to ensure that all narcotic molecules are completely destroyed. This process lasts for two seconds, enough to break down almost all organic chemical bonds.

"After all the processes, the smoke that comes out of the chimney contains only safe and natural compounds, such as carbon dioxide and water vapor," said Budi.
