JAKARTA - Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR) Sufmi Dasco Ahmad has asked the Indonesian National Police (Polri) to require payment of copyright royalties to event organizers (EOs) before issuing concert permits.
"For example, if they agree, then the granting of concert permits must also be in accordance with the EO's payment of copyright fees," Dasco said during a consultation meeting with musicians' organizations regarding the copyright controversy on Thursday, August 21st.
According to him, EOs need to pay royalties for songs to be played at a concert or performance before permits can be issued.
He stated that copyright royalties should also be a component of event costs, in addition to artist fees, ticket sales, and so on. He believes these components can then be submitted to sponsors.
Dasco hopes his proposal will quell the uproar in the music industry regarding royalty issues. He also wants royalty matters to be more transparent and accountable going forward.
Furthermore, Dasco committed to the DPR pushing for deliberations on the revision of the Copyright Law as soon as possible.
"We are also afraid of singing when we make mistakes, even though we sometimes have bad voices, so we are afraid of making mistakes and getting royalties again later," he said, quoted by ANTARA.
