JAKARTA - The Venezuelan government noted that at least 66 children of Venezuelan citizens were detained illegally in the United States (US) after being separated from their parents during President Donald Trump's strict policy regarding Immigration.
Venezuela demands that the children be handed over to its country authorities in order to be repatriated immediately.
"We have 66 children kidnapped in the United States. The number continues to grow every day... a cruel and inhumane policy," said Venezuela's Government-owned Return to the Homeland program president who advocated for the voluntary repatriation of his country's migrants, Camila Fabri, quoted from AFP.
This was conveyed in a women's themed event interspersed with a letter reading asking the US First Lady Melania Trump to become an intermediary for children kidnapped by the US to be immediately returned to Venezuela. The event participants also considered the children to be placed in orphanages.
More than 7.7 million Venezuelans have left the country since 2014. According to UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, the figure is like the largest exodus of the population in Latin American history.
UNHCR assesses the exodus based on several things that have happened in Venezuela, namely " rampant violence, inflation, war between gangs, soaring crime rates, as well as food shortages, medicines, and essential services."
