JAKARTA - A mobile phone thief was caught on CCTV cameras while in action at a minimarket on Jalan Peta Barat 1, Kalideres, West Jakarta.
Kapolsek Kalideres Kompol Arnold Julius said, in the CCTV camera footage which lasted 59 seconds, it showed a man wearing a black t-shirt entering the minimarket and pretending to make payment transactions.
When caught off guard, the perpetrator quickly took the cashier's cellphone named Dival, then left the location.
The incident went viral on social media. Meanwhile, the victim reported the incident to the Kalideres Police.
After receiving the report, the Kalideres Police Criminal Investigation Unit immediately conducted an investigation. The perpetrator was identified through the characteristics in the CCTV footage.
"The perpetrator was arrested at his home in Rawa Lele Village, RT 03/01, Pegadungan, Kalideres, West Jakarta. The perpetrator is known to have the initials AB alias Jebir (25)," said Commissioner Arnold when confirmed, Tuesday, August 19, 2025.
Apart from securing the police, he also confiscated a number of other evidence related to the crimes committed by the perpetrators of Jebir.
"We also confiscated evidence in the form of a unit of the victim's Tecno Spark Go 1 series Transformer cellphone. The perpetrator admitted his actions," he said.
For his actions, the perpetrator was charged with Article 362 of the Criminal Code concerning theft, with a maximum penalty of 5 years in prison.
