JAKARTA - The Speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR RI), Ahmad Muzani, responded to public criticism regarding officials dancing at the MPR Annual Session and the 80th Indonesian Independence Day celebrations at the State Palace.
According to Muzani, the officials' dancing was not an act of insensitivity, but rather a way to relieve tension after the official event concluded.
"Yes, I think the song is an attempt to relax the atmosphere, whether during plenary sessions of the DPR or MPR, or after the proclamation ceremony," Muzani said at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, Tuesday, August 19.
He emphasized that the dancing was done outside of formal events. "We don't think it's a problem, because it was held outside of formal events," he said.
Muzani also believes that dancing is a natural reaction to music. "People dance automatically when they hear a song. If the song fits, the body will move, whether it's the head, hands, or feet. That's natural and normal," said the former Secretary General of the Gerindra Party.
Previously, a viral video showed members of parliament dancing in the plenary meeting room of the Parliament Complex with the caption "happy after their salary increase of Rp 3 million per day."
At the Indonesian Independence Day celebration at the Palace, several ministers were also recorded dancing to the music.
