Melania Trump Writes To Putin About Kidnapping Children In The Middle Of The Russia-Ukraine War

JAKARTA - The wife of US President Donald Trump, Melania Trump, raised the issue of children in Ukraine and Russia in a personal letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

President Trump submitted the letter directly to Putin at their summit in Alaska, White House officials told Reuters.

Melania Trump, a woman born in Slovenia, did not travel to Alaska.

The whereabouts of the letter were not previously reported.

The arrest of Ukrainian children by Russia is a very sensitive measure for Ukraine.

Ukraine calls the kidnapping of tens of thousands of children brought to Russia or Russian occupation areas without the consent of their families or guardians a war crime that meets the definition of genocide in the UN agreement.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude to the First Lady in his phone call with Trump on Saturday, August 16, the Ukrainian Foreign Minister said.

"This is a true humanitarian act," said Andrii Sybiha on X.

Earlier, Moscow said it had protected vulnerable children from the war zone.

The United Nations Human Rights Office said Russia had caused suffering to millions of Ukrainian children and violated their rights since the massive invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Trump and Putin met for nearly three hours at a US military base in Anchorage without reaching a ceasefire agreement in the war in Ukraine.
