Churches And Houses Collapsed By Earthquakes, Six Districts In Sarmi Papua Affected

JAYAPURA - Head of the Sarmi Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Darius Nari, reported that six of the 10 districts in Sarmi Regency, Papua, were affected by the 6.4 magnitude earthquake that occurred on Tuesday, August 12, afternoon.

The six districts include Sarmi District, South Sarmi, East Sarmi, West Coast, West Coast, and East Coast. From all affected areas, the East Coast District was reported to have suffered the worst damage.

"Until now there have been no reports of casualties," said Darius Nari when contacted from Jayapura, Antara, Wednesday, August 13.

The earthquake caused a number of buildings to crack and collapse, including churches, residents' houses, hospital fences, and bridges in the East Coast District. The BPBD team is still collecting data to determine the number and location of the damage.

Darius also revealed that the public reported an aftershock on Wednesday morning.

Menurut laporan BMKG V Jayapura, gempa terjadi pukul 17.24 WIT dengan pusat berada di 1,90 LS dan 138,99 BT atau 27 kilometer tenggara Sarmi, pada kedalaman 13 kilometer. Guncangan dirasakan di Kabupaten Sarmi dengan intensitas IV-V MMI, serta di Kota Jayapura, Kabupaten Jayapura, dan Wamena dengan intensitas II-III MMI.

According to BMKG V Jayapura report, the earthquake occurred at 17.24 WIT with the center at 1.90 South Latitude and 138.99 East Longitude or 27 kilometers southeast of Sarmi, at a depth of 13 kilometers. The shock was felt in Sarmi Regency with intensity IV-V MMI, as well as in Jayapura City, Jayapura Regency, and Wamena with intensity II-III MMI.
