JAKARTA - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has confirmed that cases of forest and land fires (karhutla) in six priority provinces are under control until early August, which is still the peak of the dry season in Indonesia.
The six priority provinces include Riau, Jambi, South Sumatra, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, and South Kalimantan.
"This success was achieved thanks to integrated operations involving weather modification technology, deployment of aircraft fleets for patrols and water sprinkling from the air, as well as land duty units," said Head of BNPB Suharyanto after a coordination meeting of forest and land fires at the Indonesia Multi Hazard Early Warning System (Ina-MHEWS) Building in Jakarta, Antara, Tuesday, August 12.
Suharyanto ensured that each province already has a command center filled with expert representatives from BNPB, BMKG, TNI, Polri, Ministry of Forestry, and regional heads to ensure a quick response to the hotspots.
"Once a hotspot is detected, it must be verified through air patrols, then a handling step is determined, whether it is sufficient by the ground task force or for weather modification operations and water bombing operations," he said.
The scheme is considered effective in reducing forest and land fires cases. Suharyanto said this effort received full support from President Prabowo Subianto, who a few days ago held a limited meeting with ministries and technical institutions at the State Palace in Jakarta.
He gave an example, in Riau, the addition of an area of burned land of only 2.5 hectares in the past week with 55 suspected arson actors have been arrested. Meanwhile, in West Kalimantan, which previously became the largest area affected by forest and land fires, reached 1,149 hectares, no more additional hotspots in the past week.
BNPB has also asked for additional TNI and Polri personnel to remind residents not to clear land by burning or lighting a fire near the mineral peatlands that are prone to fire.

Suharyanto emphasized that BNPB will maintain full alert in all priority provinces and adjust the deployment of the air fleet according to developments in the field, because the potential for forest and land fires will remain until the dry season ends at the end of September.
"We want to ensure that conditions remain under control and the impact on health, the environment, and the economy can be suppressed," said Suharyanto.
