Three of the five US soldiers injured in the shooting at a military base in Georgia were discharged from hospital.

A US Army Sergeant is suspected of having shot and injured five soldiers with a private gun on Wednesday, August 7 at the Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield near the fire.

The suspect who was detained was identified as Quornelius Radford, 28, an active sergeant who specializes in automated logistics.

Brigadier General John Lubas, who leads Fort Stewart, said one of the injured soldiers had a slightly longer recovery journey, but doctors expect he will fully recover.

Lubas, along with Secretary of the Army Daniel Badminton, told how a soldier tackled the suspect and seized his gun when the shooting began.

A second soldier jumped at the suspect and detained him until the police arrived. Other soldiers helped the injured soldiers.

"We spoke with doctors, and one of the things I can say firmly is that the quick action of these soldiers, under pressure, trauma, and gunfire, really saved lives from losing their lives,"

The Army said it was too early to speculate on the motive for the shooting.

Mass shootings are relatively common in the United States, where firearms are widely available, and military bases, which are among the highest security places in the country, are also not spared from attacks.
