JAKARTA - Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi stated that the government opens the possibility to block digital games that contain elements of violence if they are proven to have a negative impact on the behavior of the younger generation.
Prasetyo's statement was in response to the Minister of Basic and Secondary Education Abdul Mu'ti who forbade students to play the game Roblox because it contained many violent scenes.
"If indeed we feel that we have crossed the line, what is displayed there affects the behavior of our younger siblings, so it is possible (to be blocked). We want to protect our generation, we don't hesitate too. If it contains elements of violence, we will close it, there is no problem," said Prasetyo at the Presidential Palace Complex, Jakarta, Tuesday, August 5.
Prasetyo emphasized that the government's attention is not only focused on one specific platform, but also includes all forms of digital content that have the potential to form deviant behavior in children and adolescents, including games, television broadcasts, social media, to news in mainstream media.
According to him, efforts to protect the younger generation from negative content are a shared responsibility, both morally, ethically, and socially.
Prasetyo gave an example of a number of violent incidents involving children against their parents as a form of concern over the influence of such content.
"We have to really try to reduce things that can grow something that is not good for those who watch, especially for our young generation," said Prasetyo.
He further said that the Ministry of Communication and Digital had conducted daily evaluations of various platforms, including television, social media, and game applications to detect elements of violence, hatred, and other destructive behavior.
He said the protection of the younger generation is important considering that Indonesia is a nation consisting of thousands of islands, ethnicities, religions, and languages.
"Mr. President reminds us all for us to always be introspective. So whatever the form was that could affect or trigger the occurrence of each other, we minimize this from each other as much as possible," he said.
Previously, Mendikdasmen Abdul Mu'ti reminded the dangers of Roblox's game and forbade students to play Roblox because the game featured many violent scenes.
"If you play on your cellphone, you can't watch violence, there is a fight there, there are bad words, don't watch useless things. Now, those who played the blocks (Roblox) don't play that one because it's not good," said the Minister of Education and Culture Mu'ti in Jakarta, Monday (4/8).
