JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) detected a tsunami wave as high as 19 centimeters at Sarmi Port, Papua, on Wednesday, July 30.
"Tsunami was detected in the tsunami gauge of Sarmi Port, Papua/TS.SARMI as high as 19 centimeters," said BMKG Director of Earthquake and Tsunami Daryono in a statement in Jakarta, Antara, Wednesday, July 30.
This detection is an indication that the tsunami wave has entered Indonesian waters, especially in the eastern region.
BMKG appealed to coastal communities in the areas of Papua, West Papua, North Maluku, North Sulawesi, and Gorontalo to remain vigilant and stay away from the coast. These areas had previously been declared tsunami alert status.
"People are asked to stay outside the danger zone and not return to the beach until there is an official statement to revoke the tsunami early warning from the BMKG," said Daryono.
He emphasized that the first wave was not always the largest, so people were advised to stay in a safe location for at least one kilometer from the coastline until conditions were actually declared safe.
Previously, the BMKG set a tsunami alert status with an estimated wave height of under 50 centimeters in 10 eastern parts of Indonesia. In Sarmi, the wave is expected to arrive at 16.30 WIT.

On the other hand, a number of sea level and tsunami gauge measurements in the Pacific region also show varying wave detection, such as in Kusiro, Japan (39 centimeters), Hanasaki, Japan (31 centimeters), and Kamchatka, Russia (84 centimeters).
BMKG continues to coordinate with the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), the local BPBD, the TNI/Polri, and village officials to ensure that the public gets accurate and timely information.
