Prabowo Pays Respect to Kwik Kian Gie, Mourning Atmosphere at Funeral Home

JAKARTA - President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto visited the Sentosa Funeral Home at the Gatot Soebroto Army Hospital Complex in Central Jakarta on Wednesday, July 30, to express his condolences for the passing of senior economist and national figure, Kwik Kian Gie.

Prabowo, as reported by Antara, arrived at around 1:30 p.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB), accompanied by personal bodyguards. He immediately entered the funeral home through door B and offered prayers and condolences to the deceased's family.

A mournful atmosphere enveloped the funeral home. Hundreds of wreaths lined the entrance and courtyard of the Army Hospital, sent by various national figures.

Several wreaths were presented by the 5th President of the Republic of Indonesia, Megawati Soekarnoputri, Vice President Gibran Rakabuming, Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani, Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Coordinating Minister for Law and Human Rights Yusril Ihza Mahendra, Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto, Minister of Defense Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, and Chairman of the National Economic Council Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan.

Kwik Kian Gie passed away on Monday evening, July 28, at Medistra Hospital in Jakarta at the age of 90. According to PDI-P politician Andreas Hugo Pareira, Kwik had been receiving treatment for several weeks for digestive problems before his death.

The body of the economist, born in Juwana, Pati, Central Java, on January 11, 1935, was then laid to rest at the Gatot Soebroto Army Hospital.

Kwik was known as one of Indonesia's leading economic thinkers. He served as Minister of National Development Planning/Head of Bappenas during the administration of President Abdurrahman Wahid and Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs during the administration of President Megawati Soekarnoputri.

Furthermore, Kwik was also a member of the Supreme Advisory Council and the Regional Representative Council (DPD). His work, from the New Order era to the Reformation era, made him widely known as a national ideologue and intellectual.

Kwik Kian Gie's body is scheduled to be cremated on Thursday, July 31st at 11:00 a.m. Western Indonesian Time, in a private ceremony attended only by his family.
