JAKARTA - Heavy floods in eastern Romania killed one person and damaged thousands of houses. Hundreds of people were evacuated and three helicopters were deployed to search for abandoned villagers.

Around 25 villages in nine districts were affected by heavy rains and strong winds, which caused the roofs of houses to fall and trees to be removed.

Traffic on several national roads has been hampered, the emergency response agency said.

The areas most affected were Neamt and Suceava Regencies in eastern Romania, where two rivers overflowed, killing a 66-year-old man and forcing hundreds of people to flee.

All access roads to Brosteni Village in Suceava Regency are blocked.

The Water Management Agency of the Ministry of Environment said several rivers had a record high water level. Repair work on the collapsed bridge is ongoing.
