Six people were killed when a gunman opened fire at a market in the Thai capital, Bangkok, on Monday.

Deputy Commissioner of the Bureau of Metropolitan Police Charin Gopatta said the death toll included an armed man who committed suicide.

"The police are investigating the person's identity and the motive for the incident," the Thai police said.

The five people who died at the hands of the gunmen were security officers at the market.

No tourist was killed or injured in the shooting incident, said Sanong Saengmani, a police official in the district of Bang Sue, Bangkok, where markets primarily sell agricultural products.

In the video footage shared by the police, a suspect in a white hat and backpack attached to his chest was seen walking in the parking lot.

Gun violence and possession of firearms are not uncommon in Thailand.

In October 2023, a 14-year-old suspect used a modified gun to kill two people and injured five others at a luxury mall in downtown Bangkok.

A year earlier, a former police officer killed 36 people, including 22 children, in a gun and knife attack at a nursery in eastern Thailand.
