JAKARTA - More than 100,000 people have fled due to the border war between Thailand and Cambodia. The war is entering its second day with military positions still attacking each other.

Longstanding border disputes erupted into fierce fighting involving fighter jets, artillery, tanks, and ground troops on Thursday. The UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on the crisis on Friday, July 25 evening.

Reported by the Bangkok Post, Thailand's Ministry of Home Affairs said more than 100,000 people from four border provinces had been evacuated to nearly 300 temporary shelters.

Meanwhile, the Royal Ministry of Health announced the death toll had risen to 14 people, namely 13 civilians and one soldier.

In the city of Samraong, Cambodia, 20 kilometers from the border, AFP journalists reported hearing artillery fire from a distance on Friday morning.

When gunfire began, several families packed their children and belongings into the vehicle and rushed away.

"I live very close to the border. We are afraid because they started shooting again at around 6 am," Pro Bak, 41, told AFP.

He was taking his wife and children to the Buddhist temple for cover.

"I don't know when we can go home," he said.

At least one Cambodian civilian was killed and five others injured in clashes on the border with Thailand, a Cambodian provincial official said on Friday.

About 1,500 Cambodian families from the Banteay Ampil district in the province of Oddar Meanchey, near the conflict zone, have been evacuated to a safe place, said Methas Pheakdey, a spokesman for the provincial government.
