JAKARTA - Commissioner General of the United Nations Aid and Work Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) Philippe Lazzarini stressed the inaction in pressuring Israel to allow aid to Gaza is "involvement" in making Palestinians in the Gaza Strip starving, stating, "Defense is involvement and makes us lose humanity."

In an upload on Sunday night on X, Lazzarini quoted a message often received from UNRWA staff in Gaza as saying, "I've been looking for something to feed my children but nothing," as reported by WAFA July 21.

He questioned, "How can a person respond to such words of despair? It embarrassed me and doubled my feeling of helplessness."

Lazzarini stressed that all of these are man-made, with the total impunity enjoyed by Israel.

He continued, food supplies are available just a few kilometers away, adding, "UNRWA itself has sufficient stock outside Gaza for the entire population over the next 3 months. We haven't been allowed to bring any help since March 2nd."

He also stressed the need for urgent political will, stating, "Only political and leadership will can reverse total hunger."

Meanwhile, the death toll from hunger and malnutrition in the Gaza Strip has risen to 18 in 24 hours.

The total death from hunger so far has reached 86 people, including 76 children, mostly in the northern region of the Gaza Strip, where about 17,000 children suffer from acute malnutrition.
