JAKARTA In commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the Java War (1825'1830), the Ministry of Culture (Kemenbud) plans to produce a film with the theme Pangeran Diponegoro. On the other hand, the National Library (Perpusnas) will release a heroic-themed comic of the figure at the end of 2025.

Minister of Culture Fadli Zon said that films are the most complete cultural medium because they combine various elements of art such as acting, dance, music, literature, fashion, to culinary. Therefore, he considered films to be an effective means of conveying historical value and strengthening cultural literacy.

"We will try to make a film about Prince Diponegoro which is more epic," said Fadli Zon at the commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the Java War in Perpusnas, Jakarta, quoted by ANTARA on Sunday night, July 20 evening.

He also mentioned the November 1828 film by Teguh Karya which was released in 1979 as an important reference. The film is considered a good initial depiction of the figure of Prince Diponegoro, but according to him, it needs to be updated with technology and a more modern cinematic approach.

"Of course this must work with producers, directors and screenwriters in order to produce a more complete and relevant film about Prince Diponegoro," said Fadli.

Meanwhile, Head of National Library E. Aminudin Aziz revealed that his party is preparing a comic about Prince Diponegoro which will be published in 25 volumes. The comic is planned to be released in September 2025 and developed from ancient manuscripts.

According to Aminudin, the initiative aims to ground history for the younger generation through media that is more accessible and in accordance with the times. He hopes that the comic can foster a heroic spirit and strengthen national historical identity.
