JAKARTA - Turkish prosecutors have prepared charges demanding a minimum prison sentence of five years for independent journalist Fatih Altayli for his comments on President Tayyip Erdogan's administration, the TRT state television station reported on Thursday.

Altayli, who has more than 1.5 million YouTube subscribers, was jailed pending a trial last month for his comments on social media videos about polls showing the majority of Turks oppose Erdogan's lifetime rule.

As reported by Reuters on Thursday, July 17, Altayli denied the allegations in a statement in court before his arrest.

He said his comments had been taken out of context and were part of historical rhetoric discussions.

In the video, Altayli referred to Ottoman history saying Turkey had "killed" or "watered" the rulers they no longer wanted to power.

His statement drew criticism from Erdogan's aide, Oktay Saral, who wrote on platform X, Altayli's "thit water".

The indictment alleges Altayli "threatened the president," an indictment that could be sentenced to a minimum prison sentence of five years after being found guilty, according to the TRT.

Altayli's arrest comes amid a broader crackdown on Turkish opposition figures in recent months, including the detention of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Immoglu, Erdogan's main political rival, in March.
