JAKARTA - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) stated that the collapse of the Tuntang River embankment could trigger prolonged flooding and had a massive impact in Demak Regency, Central Java.

Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center Abdul Muhari said that the flood disaster had still had a broad impact in Demak Regency since the Tuntang River embankment collapsed on May 17, 2025.

"A total of 37 villages in five sub-districts were directly affected, with a population affected by around 10,104 families (KK)," he said in Jakarta, Thursday, June 19, as reported by Antara.

He explained that the flood also had a significant impact on material damage.

Data received by BNPB reported that material damage due to flooding occurred in more than 10,000 residents' houses, 39 educational facilities were disrupted, and about 730 hectares of agricultural land was flooded.

"As well as public facilities such as markets, offices, places of worship, and road access, were also affected by the flood," he added.

According to him, as a form of quick response by the Demak Regency BPBD team together with other agencies have carried out emergency handling, including closing embankments, pumping at the critical point, as well as distributing logistics and heavy equipment.

However, his party assesses that efforts to accelerate the recovery of embankments or other similar infrastructure and strengthen community preparedness in the face of potential further disasters must still be prioritized.

This, he said, was because Demak was not only dealing with flood hazards from overflowing rivers, but also coastal flooding or tidal flooding, which is still happening, especially in the northern coastal area of Java (Pantura).

"The tidal flood is still happening in the Pantura area. Floods in a number of areas, such as Sayung and Kalisari villages, are now starting to recede, assisted by pumping at the critical point as a form of response by the Demak BPBD team," said Abdul Muhari.
