Mount Dukono Erupts With Volcanic Ash As High As 1,200 Meters

JAKARTA - Mount Dukono in North Halmahera Regency, North Maluku (Malut) erupted by removing volcanic ash as thick as 1,200 meters from the top of the mountain.

"This eruption marks a continuation of the periodic volcanic activity that is still ongoing today," said Volcano Observation Post (PGA) officer Dukono Bambang Sugiono reported by ANTARA, Wednesday, June 18.

The volcanic ash column was observed to be white to gray with thick intensity, pointing northwest.

The eruption activity was recorded through the PGA Pos seismogram in Mamuya Village, Galela District. The data recorded a maximum amplitude of up to 32 millimeters with an eruption duration of 76.07 seconds. Even though it is classified as moderate, this eruption shows that Mount Dukono is still geologically active.

The volcanic activity of Mount Dukono, which is 1,087 meters high above sea level, is currently still level II or alert.

In this status, the potential for eruptions is still quite high and could occur at any time, without striking early signs. Therefore, the volcanic observation authorities again appealed to the people of mountain areas as well as climbers and tourists not to carry out activities within a 4 kilometer radius of the Maupang Warirang Crater.

"Considering that eruptions with volcanic ash periodically occur and the distribution of ash follows the direction and speed of the wind, so that the ash slope area does not remain," said Bambang.

The public is also asked to always be aware of the impact of volcanic ash which can interfere with health and breathing.

"We ask the public to always provide masks or nasal and mouth coverings that can be used when needed, in order to avoid the threat of volcanic ash to the respiratory system," he said.

Mount Dukono, one of the active volcanoes in Indonesia. The intense volcanic activity has made the surrounding area a disaster-prone area.
