Chairman of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, asked the Government to continue to monitor and ensure the safety of Indonesian citizens (WNI) who are in conflict areas in Iran and Israel, following the military escalation between the two countries. He emphasized that the safety of Indonesian citizens must be a priority.
"The government must always ensure the safety of our Indonesian citizens, especially those living in affected areas such as Tehran and Tel Aviv. If evacuations allow, there needs to be cooperation with the international community to facilitate this," said Puan, Tuesday, June 17.
Puan also asked Indonesian citizens who are still in Israel and Iran to remain vigilant and maintain intensive communication with the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI). "The Indonesian Embassy must be present to actively help meet the needs of Indonesian citizens who may be trapped or struggling in conflict areas," he said.
Puan also appealed to the Indonesian people to temporarily postpone travel to conflict-affected areas, including to Israel and Palestine, even with the aim of a religious pilgrimage.
"We urge the Indonesian people to follow recommendations from the government to postpone travel to Israel or Palestine, including those who want to take pilgrimage trips. Safety must be a priority," said Puan.
Furthermore, Puan urged Israel to immediately stop military aggression and resolve issues in accordance with international law. He also condemned Israel's attack on Iran.
"Israel's attack on Iran violates the sovereignty of a country and is not in accordance with international law," he said.
"The acts of militarization in conflicts between countries must end immediately. The war only leaves wounds for civil society, especially vulnerable groups such as women and children," continued Puan.
Puan asked the United Nations and the international community to move actively in pushing for war to stop and Israel to stop the aggressiveness of the military. "This is our shared responsibility to ensure that conflict resolution is carried out with diplomacy and peace," said Puan.
On the other hand, Puan asked the Government to start mapping and mitigating the potential impact of the conflict between Iran and Israel on Indonesia, especially from an economic perspective. Some people are worried that the military conflict between Iran and Israel will have an impact on world oil prices that had soared.
If the conflict continues, said Puan, it is not impossible that world oil prices will again reach the 100 US dollars per barrel. He hopes that the Government will draw up anticipatory steps.
"Because this conflict condition can have a negative impact on Indonesia's trade balance, because we still depend on energy imports," concluded the former Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture.
As is known, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that there were 386 Indonesian citizens spread across 11 cities in Iran. The majority are students in the city of Qom with a total of 258 people.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also reported that there were 187 Indonesian citizens throughout Israel. Most of them are in Aravah in southern Israel.
