Mount Raung Eruption Triggers Ash Rain In Jember, Residents Get Masks

JEMBER Mount Raung, which is located on the border of Jember, Bondowoso, and Banyuwangi Regencies, erupted on Sunday morning, June 15, 2025. The eruption was recorded at an altitude of 1,200 meters above the peak or about 4,532 meters above sea level (masl).

"There was an eruption of Mount Raung at 06.28 WIB. The height of the eruption column was observed about 1,200 meters above the peak," said Mount Raung Observation Post Officer, Mukijo, as reported by ANTARA.

He explained that the gray ash column with intensity was leaning towards the southeast. Until when the report was compiled, the eruption was still ongoing.

Based on the results of seismic observations during the previous 24 hours, last Saturday, four earthquakes were recorded with an amplitude of 4 mm and an earthquake duration of between 36 to 94 seconds. In addition, there was one local tectonic earthquake with an amplitude of 25 mm, a duration of 42 seconds, as well as one distant tectonic earthquake and a continuous tremor with a dominant amplitude of 1 mm.

" Visually, the volcano was clearly visible until it was covered in fog. The main crater smoke was observed to be white, gray, and black, with moderate to thick intensity as high as 100 to 1,500 meters from the summit," added Mukijo.

The status of Mount Raung is still at Level II (Alert). People and visitors are advised not to approach the eruption center within a radius of 3 kilometers from the crater, not to down the caldera, and not to spend the night around the crater area because it has the potential to endanger safety.

Meanwhile, residents in a number of villages in Jember Regency reportedly experienced light ash rain due to the wind direction leading south. The local Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) has distributed masks to affected residents as an anticipatory measure.
