JAKARTA - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Thursday he plans to attend a summit of the Group of Seven (G7) in Canada next week and hopes to meet US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the meeting.
President Zelensky said at a press conference he plans to discuss ongoing support for Ukraine, sanctions against Russia and future funding for Kyiv reconstruction efforts during the upcoming summit.
"However, the final decision is in the White House, it depends on the President of the United States," President Zelensky said of the possibility of imposing harsh sanctions on Russia.
"I hope we will discuss (with Trump) at the G7 summit and I hope that if no decision was made before that, I will be able to at least understand how close we are to that decision," he added at a joint press conference with German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius.
President Trump last week said he had not yet decided whether to impose sanctions on Russia under consideration by the US Senate.
President Zelensky further said Kyiv was unlikely to be able to provide compensation for the US weapon system if the shipment was stopped.
