Macron Urges The Release Of Its Citizens Detained On The Ship With Greta Thunberg To Gaza

French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday urged that six French nationals detained by Israel on board the ship to Gaza be repatriated immediately.

"The president of the Republic has demanded that the repatriation of six of our French nationals, whose ships were intercepted off the coast of the Gaza Strip by Israeli authorities, be carried out as soon as possible," the presidency said in a statement published by French broadcaster BFMTV.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said Paris had asked for consular access for those detained to facilitate their return.

Among the French nationals detained by Israel is a member of the European parliament, Rima Hassan. He stated on social media that the Madleen ship carried 12 crew members who were Freedom Flotilla activists, illegally intercepted and boarded by Israeli soldiers while sailing in international waters in the early hours of Monday.

The crew also includes Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg, who accuses Israel of abusing him and calls for pressure on Sweden to press to guarantee his freedom along with other activists.

Israel's Foreign Ministry said the ship was being directed to the Israeli port and arrangements would be made to repatriate passengers to their respective home countries.
