JAKARTA - The Yogyakarta Immigration Office Class I for Immigration Inspection (TPI) arrested a student from Malaysia with the initials MHBY (30) for allegedly committing vehicle buying and selling fraud and misuse of identity by claiming to be a member of the Malaysian Royal Police.
Head of the Regional Office of the Directorate General of Immigration for the Special Region of Yogyakarta, Junita Sitorus, said that MHBY is a student of a private university in Yogyakarta.
"It is suspected that he committed fraud in the sale and purchase of vehicles and borrowing money. The person concerned used a fake identity as a member of the Malaysian Diraja Police to deceive his victim," he said as quoted by ANTARA, Thursday, June 5.
According to Junita, the action carried out by MHBY resulted in the loss of a number of victims who were Indonesian citizens, both fellow students and their relatives, with a nominal varying from hundreds of thousands to tens of millions of rupiah.
"Foreign citizens like this are clearly very disturbing and are in accordance with the criteria that they are not useful so they will be expelled," he said.
Head of the Yogyakarta TPI Class I Immigration Office, Tedy Riyandi, said that MHBY's arrest was made after the intelligence and enforcement team received complaints from the public.
After an investigation, officers secured MHBY and took deterrence measures.
"First, of course, we will pay attention to this foreign national in the detention room of the Yogyakarta Immigration Office and then wait for the repatriation process or deportation to the country of origin," said Tedy.
However, because it is suspected that there are other victims of the fraud practice, Immigration did not immediately deport MHBY and is still holding him back.
"The purpose is for the person concerned or this foreign citizen to be held accountable for his debts or fraudulent acts in Yogyakarta," he added.

Head of the Immigration Intelligence and Enforcement Section of the Yogyakarta Immigration Office, Sefta Tarigan, explained that MHBY first entered Indonesia in 2024 using a free visit visa.
MHBY then registered as an active student at one of the private universities in Yogyakarta. During his stay in Yogyakarta, MHBY offered business cooperation and buying and selling vehicles to a number of fellow students.
One of the victims, said Sefta, was even asked to deposit Rp. 17 million with the lure of a motorbike from Malaysia to be resold and the proceeds divided into two. However, the promised motorbike never came.
"The person concerned has admitted that it is not true. So, it is an act of fraud," said Sefta.
In carrying out his actions, MHBY often wore the Malaysian Royal Police (PDRM) uniform and claimed to be a member of the special "Special Protection Group" special unit tasked with escorting high-ranking officials in his country.
The Malaysian citizen also claimed to be receiving educational scholarships from the institution.
"We have gone through the Regional Office and coordinated upwards with the Malaysian Police in Jakarta. It has been confirmed that the person concerned is not included in the Malaysian Diraja Police list. It has been confirmed," said Sefta.
After returning all the losses to the victims, Yogyakarta Immigration then processed MHBY's deportation and imposed a deterrence back into Indonesian territory.
