JAKARTA - Defense ministers of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) on Thursday gathered in Brussels, Belgium, to discuss improving the military capabilities of each country, according to the secretary-general of the alliance Mark Rutte.
"Today is really important, because we will decide to improve military capabilities and this is an important basis for deciding how much money we will spend in the next few years on defense," said Rutte as quoted by ANTARA from Anadolu, Thursday, June 5.
Hoping the ministers agree with the target capabilities, Rutte reiterated the need for each country to defend itself by preparing for a possible war and to prevent any attack.
"We have to invest in our air defense system. We have to invest in our long-range missile. We have to invest in land power that can maneuver and command and control systems. All of this must happen," he added.
He warned of the need for "big investments" across NATO.
Rutte also reiterated that he would show his proposal on defense spending and new plans during a press conference at the end of the meeting.
"What we will decide in The Hague will determine how much we will spend on defense going forward. The new defense investment plan, of course, is based on our need for military facilities and infrastructure," explained the NATO Secretary General.
"Therefore, it is very important for us to decide on the target capabilities today. From there, we will assess the existing gaps," he continued.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth also reiterated the need for every country to make defense spending.
"Every country must contribute as much as 5 percent to face threats. It is impossible only to love our flag, but also to have a combat prepared formation, a force that can truly face attacks," said Hegseth.
He also underlined that countries should not depend on the US.
