JAKARTA - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) stated that the landslide incident that occurred in the excavation area of C Gunung Kuda, Cirebon Regency, West Java, was a work accident and not a natural disaster.

"Longsor di Gunung Kuda, Cirebon, bukan bencana alam, tetapi kecelakaan kerja," kata Kepala Pusat Data, Informasi dan Komunikasi Kebencanaan BNPB Abdul Muhari dilansir ANTARA, Senin, 2 Juni.

He explained that there were no natural factors, such as rain or earthquakes, which triggered the incident on Friday (30/5), so landslides were thought to have occurred due to mining activities that did not pay attention to the safety aspect of work.

This is as corroborated by the results of the investigation by the Cirebon City Police (Polresta) who named two people as suspects, namely the mine owner and the head of mining engineering.

"There was no rain or earthquake before the incident. It was a landslide because of mining activities that ignored safety," said Abdul.

He explained that Mount Kuda is an area that has a high risk of landslides and its condition is exacerbated due to mining activities.

Based on satellite imagery monitoring data carried out by BNPB, mining activities that triggered land degradation in the Gunung Kuda area have been detected in 2009 and have experienced a significant increase since 2019.

Since more than 15 years of mining, he said, the slope of the slopes of Mount Kuda has reached 60 degrees or far above the safe threshold and this has increased the potential for landslides significantly.

"In natural conditions, the slope of just 30 degrees is at risk of landslides. Without mining alone, the slopes of Mount Kuda are already prone, especially now, because the mining of Mount Kuda has slopes of up to 60 degrees," he said.

Abdul said this condition should be a serious concern for local governments to carry out stricter supervision of mining activities. Moreover, BNPB data records this as a landslide event that has had a significant impact on the seven in Cirebon Regency since 2020.

"West Java is the area with the highest landslide event of 1,515 incidents and Cirebon has occurred six times in 2020-2204, and this is what will happen next this year," he said.

On the other hand, he appreciated the rapid response of the West Java (West Java) Provincial Government (Pemprov) and the Cirebon Regency Government (Pemkab) for implementing emergency response status to support evacuation and handling efforts at landslide locations.

BNPB noted that as of Monday afternoon, a total of 21 victims died and were successfully evacuated from the landslide location. One of the newly discovered victims was identified as Sudiono (51), a resident of Girinata Village, Dupantang District, Cirebon Regency.

The data from the SAR team combined with the number of missing victims in the search effort remains as many as four more victims.

"The SAR operation is still being carried out, we ask the officers to continue to consider safety aspects," said Abdul Muhari.
