JAKARTA - Minister of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection (PPPA) Arifah Fauzi welcomed the discourse of the Minister of Religion (Menag) as well as Amirul Hajj Nasaruddin Umar to add more Amiratul Hajj from among female scholars considering the importance of the need for gender-based services for Indonesian pilgrims.

"We see that the number of worship guides for women is still not optimal. Of course this is good news, especially for prospective female pilgrims so that Hajj services become more friendly to women," said Arifah Fauzi in a press statement Saturday, May 31.

Arifah Fauzi said that his party was the only Amiratul Hajj or leader of the Indonesian women's hajj mission for the implementation of the 1446 Hijri/2025 pilgrimage. He hopes that the number of female guides and hajj officers will increase in the implementation of the pilgrimage in the coming years.

As Amiratul Hajj, the Minister of PPPA will directly monitor the implementation of services and protection for female pilgrims, ranging from accommodation and assistance to handling in emergency situations.

The Ministry of PPPA continues to coordinate with the Ministry of Religion, Hajj Organizing Officers (PPIH), and Saudi Arabian authorities to ensure all aspects of women's needs are fully met.

"More than 55 percent of Indonesian pilgrims every year are women. This shows that the need for gender-based services is very important. Many of them are elderly who need special attention and approaches, both physically and emotionally," he said.

Arifah Fauzi stated that his appointment as Amiratul Hajj was a form of government attention to ensure Indonesian pilgrims, especially women, felt safe, comfortable, and received the best service during worship.

"The presence of Amiratul Hajj and female worship guides will make female congregations feel more comfortable. They can convey their needs, complaints, and personal questions without hesitation," he said.

Previously, Minister of Religion Nasaruddin Umar, after the Coordination Meeting of Amirul Hajj at the Hajj Affairs Office, Jeddah, Friday, May 30, stated that she would recruit more female clerics as Amiratul Hajj.

This is considered important because there are personal matters and women's life experiences that are not comfortable being asked to male clerics.

"Because the issue of hajj is mostly related to women, including what is permissible and should not be done. Very private matters cannot be asked to male clerics because many hajj pilgrims are women," said the Minister of Religion.
