JEMBER - The Ministry of Social Affairs (Kemensos) facilitates 1,300 elderly citizens (elderly) to carry out free cataract operations in 32 regencies/cities throughout Indonesia in commemoration of the 2025 National Elderly Day (HLUN) centered in Jember Regency, East Java.

Minister of Social Affairs Saifullah Yusuf, or who is familiarly called Gus Ipul, visited one of the points for carrying out free cataract operations at the Dr. Soebandi Regional Hospital (RSD) in Jember, Saturday.

"Today the elderly are happy to be able to carry out HLUN in Jember, one of which is cataract operations and more than 1,300 patients nationally benefit from the cataract operation," said Gus Ipul in Jember.

He explained that the Ministry of Social Affairs will continue to provide services to elderly people who need assistance such as cataract operations, through good collaboration and synergy with various ministries, institutions, local and private governments.

"On average, they (elderly) are satisfied and comfortable following the cataract operation process. Cataract operations at RSD Dr. Soebandi Jember take place from 27 May to 2 June with several stages of the process, ranging from assessments and screening, implementation of operations and control after surgery.

According to him, the number of prospective cataract patients specifically registered in Jember was 397 people, but after going through the screening process, 272 participants managed to pass to the operating table. The operation was carried out for two days on May 31 as many as 111 patients and June 1 as many as 161 patients.

"The cataract operation has a beneficial impact on the elderly, one of the elderly who has carried out the operation, namely Tila's grandmother (60) expressed her gratitude for being able to take part in the free cataract operation," he said.

Tila hopes that after the cataract surgery, she can see normal again because during her catatric illness, she finds it difficult to move because her sight is disturbed.
