JAKARTA - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) stated that hundreds of residents were evacuated because of the flood that submerged the Segah District, Berau Regency, East Kalimantan, with water levels reaching five meters.

Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center Abdul Muhari said the emergency response effort was carried out by the Berau Regency BPBD which immediately moved quickly to evacuate the affected residents.

"BPBD Berau Regency has conducted an assessment and evacuation for a moment of flooding," Abdul said as quoted by ANTARA, Tuesday, May 27.

BNPB reported data from the Berau BPBD rapid reaction team, the largest flooding occurred in Long La'ai Village and Long Ayap Village with a water level of about five meters. The swift current of the river and the large number of logs carried away hamper land transportation access.

Abdul explained that in Long La'ai Village, floods damaged one mosque, two churches, one health center, one elementary school, village office, posyandu, PAUD, and the pier.

A total of 640 people from 212 families were affected, consisting of 341 men and 299 women.

Similar conditions occurred in Long Ayap Village. Floods damaged two houses of worship, the old village office, the traditional public meeting hall (BPU), and the village health service post (Polindes).

"It was recorded that 237 people from 76 families were affected, spread across two RTs. Until now, land road access is still cut off due to high water and heavy currents," he said.

Meanwhile, in Longmenung Village, about 65 units of residents' houses, three houses of worship, and five public facilities were affected. The total population in this village is around 260 people.

Data regarding water depth and road conditions are still in the process of being deepened by local officers.
