The CIA said its security personnel detained someone on Thursday morning after news of the shooting outside the intelligence agency's headquarters.
A CIA spokesman confirmed security staff "fight with someone" outside the main gate in Virginia, United States.
The spokesman declined to say whether the suspect was shot or not.
NBC News reported earlier that the person was shot, citing a person familiar with the matter.
The incident occurred around 4 a.m. Thursday, May 22, a Fairfax police spokesman told ABC News.
The CIA closed the main gate at the deadlock complex and directed employees to look for alternative routes.
The shooting incident came after two Israeli Embassy staff were killed by an armed man in downtown Washington on Wednesday night.
There are no indications that the incident was interrelated.
