BANYUMAS - The Banyumas City Police Criminal Investigation Unit (Satreskrim) is investigating a suspected scamming case in the form of online fraud or extortion experienced by a doctor in Banyumas Regency, Central Java.

Head of the Banyumas Police Satreskrim Commissioner Andriansyah Rithas Hasibuan said his party had received a report related to the alleged scamming case.

According to him, the case relates to violations of the Electronic Information and Transactions Law (ITE) and the extortion attempt has been handled by investigators by examining witnesses.

"The witnesses who were examined apart from the complainant, there were already about four people and we are still investigating further. This case is a lesson for all of us, to be careful in using cellphones and be aware of unknown numbers," he said when contacted by reporters in Purwokerto, Banyumas Regency, Thursday, May 22, confiscated by Antara.

On a separate occasion, the victim's personal lawyer, Prih Utami, admitted that his party and the victim had reported the case to the Banyumas Police.

According to him, the case experienced by his client began with a video call from an unknown number around March 2025.

"Our client does have great concern for his patients, so when he received a call from an unknown number, he was worried that the call was from one of the patients, so he was immediately picked up," he explained.

However, when the video call was picked up, he said, the caller did not speak anything until a few moments later a WhatsApp (WA) message came in.

According to him, the message from the foreign number offers business cooperation with an investment value of hundreds of millions of rupiah to his client.

"Then in April, my client received WA from an unknown number that also offered business cooperation, but was rejected," he said.

Because of his refusal, he said, the person who sent the message through the number began threatening to viralize a video called an indecent video from the doctor.

He said his client ignored the threat because he felt he had never made or sent videos as alleged by the sender of the message.

However, on April 24, he continued, the indecent video circulated among his client's family and workplace.

"In this regard, we and the victim reported this case to the Banyumas Police on April 27 to provide a deterrent effect on the perpetrators. We don't want this case to happen to other people, just because it raises an unknown call for a few seconds, the impact could be this big," he said.
