JAKARTA - An unidentified gunman shot dead a former Ukrainian politician on Wednesday outside a school on the outskirts of Madrid.

Andriy Portnov, 51, was previously a senior aide to the former pro-Russian Ukrainian president, Viktor Yanukovich, who was ousted in a 2014 popular uprising.

Police arrived at the scene after receiving a call at 9:15 a.m. local time, about a man with gunshot wounds on the street outside an American school in Madrid, on the outskirts of Pozuelo de Alarcon.

"Some people shot him in the back and head and then fled to the forest area," a Spanish Interior Ministry source said.

When emergency workers arrived, they found Portnov dead with three gunshot wounds.

Police closed the sidewalk outside the school and several ambulances were parked nearby.

Portnov departed for Russia in 2014 and faces an investigation into Ukraine on charges of treason and embezzlement.

He was the target of EU sanctions, although sanctions and charges were later dropped.

The US Treasury Department put Portnov on its sanctions list in 2021, saying it had "established extensive ties with justice and law enforcement officials of Ukraine through bribery".

Portnov seems to have lived in Madrid since at least April 2024 when he signed a power of attorney in the Spanish capital over the transfer of property in Ukraine to his children, according to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reports.
