JAKARTA - Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said the United States (US) demand that Tehran refrain from enrichment of uranium as "excessive and outrageous".

"I don't think nuclear negotiations with the US will come to fruition. I don't know what will happen," Khamenei said and stressed that Washington must refrain from making outrageous demands in negotiations.

While there is hope that the fifth round of negotiations will take place over the weekend in Rome, nuclear negotiations remain unclear as Iran and the US have disagreed on the issue of nuclear enrichment.

Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi previously said negotiations would fail if Washington insisted Tehran refrain from enriching domestic uranium, which the US said was a possible route to developing a nuclear bomb.

Although Tehran says its nuclear energy program is fully aimed at peace.

Meanwhile, another Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister, Kazem Gharibabadi, said Tehran was reviewing proposals from the United States.

Last week US President Donald Trump said Tehran needed to "move quickly or something bad will happen."

The US president has repeatedly warned Iran that it will be bombed and face severe sanctions if it does not come to compromise to complete its disputed nuclear program.

During his first term as president in 2017-21, Trump withdrew the United States from a 2015 deal between Iran and major world countries imposing strict restrictions on Tehran's enrichment activities in exchange for international sanctions relief.

Trump, who called the 2015 deal one-sided and beneficial for Iran, also reimposed broad US sanctions on Iran.

The Islamic Republic responded by increasing enrichment.
