JAKARTA Thousands of online motorcycle taxi drivers (ojol) from various regions crowded the Horse Statue area, Central Jakarta, Tuesday (20/5), to voice their demands regarding the application tariff cut which is considered to be increasingly strangling. The drivers requested that the discount from the applicator be limited to a maximum of 10 percent for the sake of a decent survival.

This peaceful action made Medan Merdeka Selatan Street completely closed, especially the route leading to the Gambir area. The concentration of the masses diverted traffic to avoid severe congestion around the Monas area.

"The cut from the application can now be more than 50 percent. We don't reject the application, but we just want a more humane policy. We work from morning to night, but the results are not enough for the needs of the family," said Agus, one of the ojol drivers from Tangerang who participated in the demonstration.

These demands reflect the anxiety that has long been felt by ojol drivers, who are often at the forefront of digital-based public transportation services, but do not receive proper protection or profit sharing.

Responding to the action, the Central Jakarta Metro Police Chief, Kombes Pol Susatyo Purnomo Condro emphasized that his party puts forward a friendly and persuasive approach in security. He ensured that all personnel were not equipped with firearms and were ready to serve the people who expressed their aspirations.

"We have directed officers in the field to be humane. We respect the right of the community to express opinions in public," he said.

He also appealed to Jakarta residents to avoid the Monas area and the DPR RI Building during the action to avoid traffic congestion.

This action has become one of the largest forms of open protest from the online motorcycle taxi driver community in recent months, and is a reflection of the increasing economic pressure they face due to profit-oriented policies from applicators.
