JAKARTA - Seven European countries insist they will not remain silent on the suffering of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip due to Israeli attacks.
"We will not stand by watching man-made humanitarian disasters that are happening in front of our eyes in Gaza. More than 50,000 men, women, and children have lost their lives," said Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Spain, Slovenia, Malta, and Norway in a joint statement reported by ANTARA from Anadolu, Saturday, May 17.
They warned more people could lose their lives from hunger in the coming days as Israel is still blocking humanitarian aid to the Palestinian enclave.
"We call on the Israeli government to immediately cancel their current policies," the European countries said.
Israel was asked to stop military operations and lift the blockade so that humanitarian aid could be distributed safely and without obstacles throughout Gaza "according to humanitarian principles".
The seven countries also condemned Israel's escalation of the West Bank and East Jerusalem, including violence by illegal settlers, expansion of illegal settlements, and increasingly intensive Israeli military operations there.
According to them, expelling the Palestinian people, in any way, is unacceptable and will violate international law.
"We reject any plans or attempts to change the demographics. We must bear the responsibility to stop this devastation," they said in the statement.
