JAKARTA - Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi sharply criticized President Donald Trump's statement about Iran, blaming the United States for decades of sabotage against Tehran and covering up Israel's crimes in the region.

Speaking to reporters after a cabinet meeting on Wednesday morning, Foreign Minister Araghchi reacted to President Trump's latest statement accusing Iran of supporting insecurity in the region.

"I heard the US President's statement last night. Unfortunately, a misleading narrative was conveyed. The United States, through its sanctions for more than forty years, and with pressure and threats from its military and non-military, has hindered the progress of the Iranian nation," he said, quoted by Mehr May 14.

"What is really responsible for Iran's economic difficulties is America and its hegemonic policies that have been forced on our people," he explained.

"The fact that the US is turning a blind eye to the threat of Israel and all crimes committed by Israel in the region, while trying to describe Iran as a threat, is pure fraud. This is a deliberate attempt to distort the reality about who the real aggressor is," said Iran's Foreign Minister.

Earlier, President Trump while in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on Tuesday called Iran the "most destructive force" in the Middle East, in stark contrast to what he called Saudi Arabia's "constructive vision".

He warned the US would never allow it to acquire nuclear weapons, saying it was willing to make a deal with Tehran, but if its leaders changed course.

"I want to make a deal with Iran," he said.

"But if the Iranian leaders reject this peace treaty. We have no choice but to give maximum pressure," he added.
