JAKARTA - The 19th Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC) Conference or the Association of State Parliament Members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OKI) held by the DPR RI has begun. The agenda for the first day of the OKI Parliament conference is the determination of the agenda and affirmation of the theme and substance that will be discussed in this OKI parliamentary forum.

The 19th PUIC was held at the DPR Building, Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, on May 12, 2025. The 19th PUIC session which was held for 5 days was attended by a parliamentary delegation of 37 OIC member countries.

Chairman of the Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Agency (BKSAP) of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Mardani Ali Sera, said that on this first day a number of representatives of the OKI parliament set an agenda with the theme 'Good Governance and Strong Institution as a Pillar of Resilience' through a standing commitment meeting.

"This momentum marks Indonesia's strategic role as the center of diplomacy in the Islamic world, and affirms the commitment of the DPR RI in strengthening good governance and strong institutions as the main foundation of global resilience," said Mardani, Monday, May 12.

In addition, today's 19th PUIC standing committee meeting also discussed strengthening the role of Parliament through transparency and accountability. The PUIC trial, said Mardani, became an important stage for PUIC member countries to unite their views and strengthen solidarity in facing the challenges of the modern world.

"Starting from prolonged conflicts such as in Palestine, climate change, to economic inequality and crisis of public trust in state institutions," he said.

The conference in Indonesia, which also coincided with 25 years of PUIC, called Mardani, will discuss the vision and mission to help people from vulnerable groups.

"The voice of Parliament is the voice of those who are marginalized," explained Mardani.

Mardani, who directly chaired the 53rd PUIC standing committee (economy committee) session, also called on and strongly condemned Israel's expanding settlements in an illegal way and systematic genocide that occurred in Gaza, which the House of Representatives voiced at today's meeting.

"Indonesia urges all PUIC members to take concrete action through parliamentary diplomacy, humanitarian solidarity, and support for international legal processes to hold all responsibility for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by Israel to uphold justice for the Palestinian people," he explained.

Mardani added that PUIC must be able to bridge peace for countries that are in conflict.

Not only Palestine. We cover everything, including India's path of peace with Pakistan, and Ukraine with Russia," said Mardani.

In addition to the executive committee meeting agenda, today there is also the 13th meeting of the Palestinian Standing Committee. Furthermore, the 4th meeting of the Muslim community and minorities was also held, as well as the meeting of Arab groups.

PUIC itself is the only organization that amasses the parliament of OIC member countries. Founded officially on June 17, 1999 with headquarters in Tehran, Iran, PUIC serves as an important forum to strengthen diplomacy between parliaments and encourage policy synergies among Islamic countries.

Indonesia through the DPR has been a member of the PUIC since 1999 and continues to play an active role in discussing strategic issues concerning the interests of the people. The 19th PUIC Conference is the second time the Indonesian House of Representatives has hosted it, after previously successfully holding the 7th PUIC Conference in Palembang on January 24, 2012.

The re-election of Indonesia as the host is not only a form of respect, but also an acknowledgment of the leadership of the DPR RI in prioritizing the practice of democracy, inclusiveness, and accountability in institutional governance.

"The DPR raises crucial issues, including the importance of collective support for Palestinian independence, strengthening Islamic economic cooperation, protecting the Muslim minority community, and empowering women in parliament," explained Mardani.

Parliament is believed to have a strategic role in maintaining national and regional stability. In the context of the Islamic world, according to Mardani, synergy between parliaments can be an effective tool to build solidarity, bridge differences, and strengthen cross-sectoral collaboration in responding to the challenges of the times.

"By bringing the theme 'Good Governance and Strong Institutions as Pillars of Resilience', Indonesia through the DPR wants to inspire PUIC member countries to continue to build institutional capacity, strengthen transparency and accountability, and place the people as the center of all policies and parliamentary work," he said.

On the second day on Tuesday, May 13, the 19th PUIC Conference had an agenda for Muslim Women's Parliament sessions and several other meetings. Then on Wednesday, May 14, the Chairperson of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, will officially open the 19th PUIC Conference Puripuna session. On the sidelines of the PUIC forum, the DPR delegation will also hold bilateral meetings with the parliament of a number of friendly countries.
