JAKARTA - Russia and Ukraine are again launching airstrikes in their respective capitals. Two people died as a result of attacks in Kyiv, while a number of Ukrainian drones were destroyed as they approached Moscow.

The debris that fell from the destroyed drone sparked fires in apartments and buildings in three Kyiv districts, killing two people in the bustling Shevchenkivskyi district, Ukraine's emergency services said on the Telegram messaging app.

As reported by Reuters on Wednesday, May 7, four children were among seven injured as a result of a drone strike in Kyiv that occurred hours after Russia sent missiles to the Ukrainian capital, said Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko.

Five people were injured in Dniprovskyi district in Kyiv which stretches along the Dnipro River.

Moscow's main airports did not operate for the night after Mayor Sergei Sobyanin that Russian air defense units destroyed 14 Ukrainian drones after 10 p.m. on Tuesday, without any reported damage.

Ukraine attacked Moscow with drones for the third night and the attack came as the Russian capital prepares for a long holiday weekend and May 9 parade to mark the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Soviet Union and its allies in the Second World War.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, who will host leaders of several countries at the parade, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, called for a May 8-10 ceasefire in the Moscow-launched war in Ukraine in February 2022. P

Ukrainian resident Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the move useless and offered an unconditional ceasefire for at least 30 days in line with the US proposal launched in March.

Russian aviation watchdog Rosaviatsia said flights were stopped at all four airports serving Moscow for several hours a night to ensure air safety for the third night in a row. Airports in a number of regional cities are also closed.
