JAKARTA - The Ministry of Elementary and Secondary Education (Kemendikdasmen) stated that the application of artificial intelligence (AI) and coding subjects as part of the choice curriculum at elementary to middle school levels is just waiting for the Ministerial Regulation.

"We have completed academic papers and also the achievements of learning for coding subjects and artificial intelligence. Now we are in the process of waiting for the issuance of the Regulation of the Minister of Basic and Secondary Education," said Minister of Education Abdul Mu'ti as quoted by ANTARA, Tuesday, April 29.

This was conveyed by Abdul Mu'ti as part of the follow-up to President Prabowo Subianto's direction regarding the digitization of national education.

He explained that these subjects will be an option for elementary, junior high and high school students, starting from grade 5 elementary school. This policy is expected to prepare students to face the challenges of the times through mastery of digital technology from an early age.

The Coding and AI subjects are planned to be applied for the 2025-2026 school year in schools that have met the criteria.

According to Abdul Mu'ti, the Ministry of Education and Culture will also launch a digital learning device that will be officially carried out on May 2, 2025, to coincide with National Education Day.

"Digitalization of education is part of our efforts to support the implementation of coding learning and artificial intelligence," he said.

In addition, the Ministry of Education and Culture is also preparing training programs for teachers to be ready to teach Coding and AI materials in class.

The training process is carried out in collaboration with a number of partners and has been supported by adequate funding.

"Hopefully, this step can accelerate the transformation of digital education according to the direction of the President," he said.

Abdul Mu'ti emphasized that Coding and AI materials not only focus on technical capabilities, but also cover aspects of ethics and character.

"There are also those that contain digital celebration so that they are not only able to use that technology, but also use it in a wise way in a good way," he said.

With this step, the government hopes that digital education will not only produce a generation that is technology literate, but also be able to use technology in a dignified manner to support quality education for all.
