JAKARTA - An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale has injured at least 20 people and damaged a number of buildings in the port city of Esmeraldas, Ecuador.

According to a BBC report, data from the European Mediterranean Seismological Center said the quake occurred at a depth of 30 km (18.64 miles) near Ecuador's coast at 6.44 local time on Friday morning.

While launching ANTARA, Saturday, April 26, through a press conference broadcast on platform X, Friday, Tutiven said a total of 710 people (179 families) were affected by the earthquake, with 20 others injured.

The earthquake has damaged 179 houses, 26 schools, 33 infrastructure locations and seven health facilities. Electricity disturbances were also reported in a number of affected areas.

Ecuador's President, Daniel Noboa, has sent all members of his government to Esmeraldas to coordinate humanitarian aid and handling for residents whose homes have been declared unfit for habitation.
