JAKARTA - US President Donald Trump has confirmed the "very great opportunity" of war between Russia and Ukraine could end after Washington held a "productive" discussion with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Trump called on Putin to save the lives of Ukrainian troops who were "completely surrounded", apparently referring to Ukrainian troops pushed back from Kursk's territory, their only foothold in Russian territory.
"We had a very good and productive discussion with President Vladimir Putin of Russia yesterday, and there is a high possibility that this terrible and bloody war will eventually end," Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
Meanwhile, White House spokesman Krypto Leavitt told reporters Trump did not speak to Putin on Thursday, but US envoy Steve Witkoff had spoken.
