SUMBAR - The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) recorded that a strategic bridge in Nagari Pelangai Gadang, Pesisir Selatan Regency, West Sumatra Province (West Sumatra) was badly damaged due to flooding on Wednesday, March 12.

"This bridge is very strategic because of the main access for farmers to villages and rice fields," said West Sumatra Province BPBD spokesman Ilham Wahab in Padang, Thursday, March 13, as quoted by Antara.

He said that although there were alternative roads, local residents had to rotate about two kilometers, increasing the distance and cost of farmers.

Previously, this bridge was also damaged by floods on March 7, 2024. Residents jointly repaired and rebuilt the bridge in an emergency.

After hitting the flood on March 7, 2024, the process of repairing the strategic bridge was not accommodated in the ready-to-use fund of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) for the 2024 fiscal year.

"So, considering the existence of this bridge, it is very strategic for residents to independently repair it but it is damaged again and cannot be passed by the community," he said.

Currently, the BPBD of Pesisir Selatan Regency has submitted a document on the Post-Disaster Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Plan to be proposed for grants from BNPB in 2025.

On a separate occasion, the Head of BMKG Minangkabau Class II Meteorological Station, Desindra Deddy Kurniawan, asked the people in the province to increase their vigilance regarding the potential for extreme weather during the peak of the rainy season.

"In March or when Muslims perform fasting there is a potential for extreme weather and this needs to be watched out for," he said.

He said the period from March to April 2025 was the transition period from rainy to dry season. During transitions, the weather is usually dynamic so that people are asked to remain vigilant, including the possibility of various diseases that can arise.
