Foreign Minister Lavrov Says US-Russia Shares Logic About Unacceptable Military Confrontation

JAKARTA - Moscow and Washington share logic about the inacceptability of confrontations, including military confrontations, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in an interview with US blogger Mario Nawfal, Larry Johnson and Andrew Napolitano.

"It is highly understood that countries such as the United States and Russia will never have the same national interest," Foreign Minister Lavror was quoted as saying by TASS March 13.

"They will not be in line, maybe even 50 percent or less. However, when they are in line, and in this situation, if we are responsible politicians, it must be used to develop this simultaneous and similar interest into something practical that will be mutually beneficial, be it economic projects, infrastructure projects, or other things," explained the Russian top diplomat.

Diplomacy of fast movement stems from US President Donald Trump's phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin last month, bringing cool winds amid tensions over relations between the two countries.

After that, the two countries held two rounds of high-level delegation meetings, the first in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on February 18, the second meeting in Istanbul, Turkey on February 27.

"We all see how fast the world is changing, the situation in the world. In this case, I would like to note that the first contact with the new US administration inspired certain expectations," Russian President Vladimir Putin said at a Federal Security Service meeting late last month.

"There is a shared dedication to working to restore relations between countries and gradually resolve a large number of systemic and strategic problems accumulated in the global architecture," he continued.

Foreign Minister Lavrov stressed that during talks between Russia and the US in Riyadh, both sides emphasized "when interests are inconsistent and conflicting, responsible countries must do everything not to allow this contradiction to turn into confrontation."

"Especially military confrontation that will be catastrophic for many other countries. We told them we fully agree with this logic," Foreign Minister Lavrov said.
