JAKARTA - Iran will consider negotiations with the United States if the purpose of the negotiations is to address concerns about its potential nuclear program militarization, Iran's permanent representative to the United Nations said in a post on social media X on Sunday.

The comments came a day after Tehran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Iran would not negotiate under the US "intimidation".

"If the purpose of the negotiations is to address concerns about the vis-vis potential for the militarization of Iran's nuclear program, such discussions can be considered," the representative wrote in X, as reported by Reuters on March 10.

"However, if the goal was to dismantle Iran's peaceful nuclear program, such negotiations would never have happened," the post added.

Earlier, Iran's Supreme Leader Khamenei was quoted by state media as saying on Saturday: "They made new demands that Iran, of course, would not accept, such as our defense capabilities, missile range, and international influence."

Separately, US President Donald Trump in an interview with Fox Business Network broadcast on Friday last week said he wanted to negotiate a nuclear deal with Iran and had sent a letter to the country's leaders suggesting talks with Tehran.

The West is known to be concerned about Iran's ability to achieve the ability to make nuclear weapons. Meanwhile, Tehran denies it is trying to obtain nuclear weapons.

While expressing his openness to the deal with Tehran, President Trump has reimposed a "maximum pressure" campaign implemented during his first term as president to isolate Iran from the global economy and push its oil exports to zero.

Separately, UN nuclear watchdog (IAEA) chief Rafael Grossi said time was running out for diplomacy to impose new restrictions on Iran's activities, as Tehran continued to accelerate its uranium enrichment to a close level of weapons.

Tehran itself has always said the country's nuclear program was solely for peaceful purposes.
