Owners Of Home Ecstasy Plants In Medan Sentenced To Death

The panel of judges at the Medan District Court, North Sumatra, sentenced Hendrik Kosumo (41) to death, the owner of a home ecstasy factory on Jalan Captain Jumhana, Medan Area District, Medan City.

"The defendant Hendrik Kosumo was sentenced to death," said Hakim, Chairman of Nani Sukmawati during a hearing reading the verdict at the Medan District Court, Thursday, March 6.

The judge stated that the defendant Hendrik was found guilty of producing, importing, exporting or distributing class I narcotics in the form of non-plants weighing more than five grams.

"The defendant was proven to have violated Article 113 paragraph (2) of Law Number 35 of 2009 concerning Narcotics, as the second alternative indictment," said Nani.

In addition to the defendant Hendrik, the panel of judges also sentenced four other defendants, namely Mhd Syahrul Savawi alias Dodi (43), Arpen Tua Purba (29), Hilda Dame Ulina Pangaribuan (36), and Debby Kent (36) who are the wives of the defendant Hendrik Kosumo.

The defendant Mhd Syahrul Savawi alias Dodi was sentenced to life imprisonment because he was proven to be the person responsible for the procurement of ecstasy printing and marketing tools. Meanwhile, the defendants Arpen Tua Purba, Hilda Dame Ulina Pangaribuan, and Debby Kent were each sentenced to 20 years in prison.

"The defendants were found guilty of violating Article 114 paragraph (2) of Law Number 35 of 2009 concerning Narcotics," explained Judge Nani.

According to the panel of judges, the actions of the defendants were burdensome because they had disturbed the public and did not support the government's program to eradicate drugs.

"Meanwhile, no mitigating factors were found," he said.

After reading the verdict, Chief Judge Nani Sukmawati gave the defendants and the public prosecutor (JPU) of the Medan Kejari.

"Given seven days to state whether to appeal or accept this verdict," said Hakim Nani.

The Public Prosecutor's Office of Medan Rizqi Darmawan previously charged the defendants Hendrik Kosumo and Syahrul Savawi alias Dodi each with the death penalty.

"The actions of the two defendants violated Article 113 paragraph (2) of Law Number 35 of 2009 concerning Narcotics, as the second alternative indictment," he said.

Meanwhile, the other three defendants, namely Arpen Tua Purba (29), Hilda Dame Ulina Pangaribuan (36), and Debby Kent (36) were each sentenced to life imprisonment.

Public Prosecutor Rizqi in his indictment stated that this case began on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, on Jalan Captain Jumhana, Medan City. At that time, Bareskrim Polri officers together with the North Sumatra Police conducted a raid on a shop house or shophouse suspected of being the location for making ecstasy pills.

"From the disclosure, officers confiscated evidence in the form of ecstasy printed devices, 8.96 kilograms of solid chemicals, 218.5 liters of liquid chemicals, 532.92 grams of mephedroneserbuk, 635 ecstasy pills, various precursor chemicals, and laboratory equipment," he said.

From the interrogation carried out by the police, it is known that the home factory has been operating for about six months and marketing ecstasy pill products to discotheques and discotheques in North Sumatra, including Pematangsiantar City.

The defendants Hendrik Kosumo and Debby Kent are husband and wife couples as owners and managers of the home ecstasy factory.

"The defendant Syahrul is responsible for procuring printed and marketing tools. The defendant Hilda ordered ecstasy, and Arpen was the courier delivering the pills," Rizqi explained.
