YOGYAKARTA - Two female climbers, Lilie Wijayanti Poegiono and Elsa Laksono, died in Puncak Cartensz, Timika, Central Papua. The head of the Timika SAR Office, I Wayan Suyatna, revealed the chronology of the climb that ended tragically. Based on SAR records, this incident began when 10 climbers and five guides crossed the tryolean bridge on Saturday (1/3) at 10:51 WIT.

At around 14.00 WIT, the group is expected to have reached the peak. However, at 19.10 WIT, their battery handy talky (HT) began to weaken, causing difficulties in communicating.

At 20.29 WIT, the basecamp team held a briefing to plan rescue efforts. At around 20.45 WIB, one of the guides named Nurhuda arrived at the basecamp in hypothermia and immediately asked the team for help.

Shortly thereafter, Yustinus Sondegau from the basecamp went up to the top with emergency equipment, including sleeping bags, fly sheet, hot water, and radio. In addition, an international guide named Dawa Gyalje Sherpa also left for the summit to make a rescue at around 21.48 WIT.

In short, on Sunday at around 00.07 WIB, Dawa managed to meet Lilie and Elsa, then immediately gave help.

"My deepest condolences for the passing of Mrs. Lilie Wijayanti Poegiono (Mamak Pendaki) and Mrs. Elsa Laksono. May the bereaved family be given fortitude and strength. Hopefully Mrs. Lilie and Mrs. Elsa will be given the best place by His side," said Fiersa on her Instagram account @fiersabesari.

Fiersa revealed that she received news about the deaths of Lilie and Elsa in Puncak Jaya while at the Yellow Valley (YV) basecamp. He admitted that he was surprised and deeply saddened by the departure of the two senior climbers.

In addition, Fiersa also shared additional chronology regarding the tragic events at Carstensz Pyramid. He mentioned that apart from the Lilie and Elsa groups, there were several other groups of climbers who were also at the location.

"I am part of a team consisting of three people. Meanwhile, Mrs. Lilie and Mrs. Elsa are members of a team consisting of four people (different tour operators). We are accompanied by guides," said Fiersa.

Fiersa revealed that she only learned about the tragedy that befell Lilie and Elsa after arriving at the Yellow Valley (YV) basecamp on February 28 at 22:48 WIT. He received the sad news on March 1 at around 04.00 WIT.

"Surprised and sad, but together with people at YV, contact victims who are trapped using HT to keep responding, until they are finally picked up by volunteers - both local and international - on March 1, 2025. Alhamdulillah, the three of them survived, even though they were in critical condition," he said.

Fiersa expressed her gratitude to all those who have provided assistance. He also appealed to everyone to refrain from comments that are not empathetic and respect for the bereaved family and relatives.
