JAKARTA - The United States (US) State Department this week suspended the initiative of the International Development Agency (USAID) which has invested hundreds of millions of dollars to restore Ukraine's energy grid from Russian attacks, according to a NBC News report.
Last night's power outages occurred in several Ukrainian regions following an attack on energy infrastructure. NBC News quoted two USAID officials as asking for anonymity.
"This move significantly weakens the current government's ability to negotiate a ceasefire, as well as sends a signal to Russia that we don't care about Ukraine or our previous investment," said one USAID official involved in a mission in Ukraine.
"Russia is at war in Ukraine through two paths: military war and economics," he added. "We have provided great support to the Ukrainian government to prevent a macroeconomic crisis."

The official also confirmed that the US had helped stabilize Ukraine's energy network and prevent economic collapse. "Enting this program actually undermines these efforts," he said.
Ukraine continues to face an almost unbroken attack on its energy infrastructure, which causes power cuts in some areas at night.
Until now, the US State Department has not responded to requests for comment regarding the decision.
