Russia Considers Britain's Latest Sanctions Unauthorized, Alludes To Peace Talks On US Initiation

JAKARTA - The Russian Embassy in London said Britain's new sanctions package against Russia over their invasion of Ukraine was "unauthorized". Russia said many of those targeted by sanctions had nothing to do with the conflict.

Britain on Monday announced its biggest package of sanctions against Russia since the start of the war in Ukraine, including companies around the world supplying components used by the Russian military.

The Russian Embassy called the action "sia-sia" in a statement posted on Facebook on Tuesday, February 25.

"The moment London has chosen to trigger a hysteric sanction is quite symbolic at a difficult time when the foundation of Ukraine's future completion process is being formed in line with the Russia-US agreement," the British Embassy said in a statement.

The UK sanctions package, which coincided with Russia's third anniversary of the invasion, also targeted North Korean Defense Minister No Kwang Chol over the deployment of North Korean troops in Russia, and Kyrgyzstan-based Bank Keremet.

As previously reported, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said countries rich in Group Seven (G7) should be willing to take more risks in connection with sanctions against Russia over their invasion of Ukraine.

"I believe the G7 should be ready to take more risks, including oil price restrictions, sanctioning Russian oil giants, and attacking banks that allow sanctions avoidance," Starmer said, speaking via video link at an international meeting held on the 3rd anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. reported by Reuters, Monday, February 24.

Starmer also said Britain would announce its biggest sanctions package against Russia since the start of the war, including further action against ships used to help Russia avoid sanctions.

Britain is also targeting companies in China and other countries that supply military components.

Complete details regarding the sanctions have not been published by the government.

Previously, the UK said it would ban the entry of individuals who provide significant support or owe wealth to the Russian state.
